Soak the carpet with a pint of water. Use a vacuum to suck the water out and get the carpet clean. See if you can get your sponge dry through the carpet. You can not. Now imagine flooring beneath your sponge and carpet above. It is trapped. There is no where for the water to go. It cannot evaporate because of the carpet above.
